Five things to consider when planning DIY
There are many things you should consider when deciding to get down to some home DIY. It may be a small job or a huge overhaul of the home, but you should never start without taking various things into consideration. Below is a simple guide of what you should really think about before putting any DIY ideas into action.
Understand the timescale for the job
It may sound like the most obvious thing in the world, but before you start any form of DIY you have to carefully plan how long it will take you to complete the task. For example, sanding a floor could take an entire weekend rather than just an evening. In this respect it’s important you plan properly, if you have to go back to a job you’ll find it much more difficult to complete. If you set aside the right time, you’re much more likely to complete it and be happy with it. To understand reasonable lengths of time for certain projects, have a look in home magazines to get some ideas of timescale.
Plan your budget accordingly
It’s important that you set a budget for any DIY project. If you’re planning on doing a big project you should always set aside some money as a contingency. You should also try and be realistic about your budget. If you try and do things on the cheap you’re unlikely to get the finish you’re really after and then you’ll only be cheating yourself. If you don’t plan your budget and you run out of money in the middle of the project it will be extremely frustrating.
Get the right tools
You must make sure you have all the materials and tools you need to finish the project. This requires research beforehand so you’ll already have a good feel for the tools and material you’ll need. Don’t worry about buying extra materials too as if you don’t use them you and the packaging is still sealed you can return them to the shop.
Insurance
If you’re planning a DIY project that may involve any structural changes to your home, such as moving an internal wall, its good practice to check with your insurer as in some cases failure to do so could invalidate your insurance policy. Once the work has been completed, you’ll also need to think about updating your buildings insurance. Make sure you shop around to get the best building insurance quote to ensure you get the best deal.
Check on planning permission
If you’re revamping your home with a major DIY project you may need to get planning permission. For example, if you’re undertaking a loft conversion which will be used for living space you should always check with your local council whether or not you need planning permission. Always do this before you start.
